CPR1st Instructor Course

1.1 INTRODUCTION
This course is Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation and First Aid combined into one (1) program. It is designed to teach instructors the proper techniques to safely teach the administration of CPR and evaluate the correct First Aid for the injury.

1.2 QUALIFICATIONS OF GRADUATES
Upon successful completion of this course, graduates may:
1. Evaluate students on their ability to
Provide one (1) person adult CPR
Administer the proper First Aid to an injured person.
2. One (1) CPR1st courses must be taught every two (2) years or a re-qualification course must be taken.

1.3 WHO MAY TEACH
Who may teach this course?
1. Any active SDI/TDI CPR1st Instructor Trainer may teach this course.

1.4 STUDENT – INSTRUCTOR RATIO
Academic:
1. Unlimited, so long as adequate facility, supplies and time are provided to insure comprehensive and complete training.
Confined Water (Swimming pool-like conditions):
1. N/A.
Open Water (Ocean, lake, quarry, spring, river or estuary):
1. N/A.

1.5 STUDENT PRE-REQUISITES
The Student must:
1. Must be eighteen (18) years old.
2. Must have a minimum certification level of Dive Master or Assistance Instructor

1.6 COURSE STRUCTURE AND DURATION
The Student must:
1. Recognize and evaluate an emergency situation.
2. Know how to teach divers to activate or alert the EMS.
3. Competently teach divers to provide CPR and First Aid to a non-breathing or injured person.
Course Structure:
4. SDI allows instructors to structure courses according to the number of students participating and their skill level.
Duration:
5. A minimum of two (2) hours.

1.7 ADMINISTRATIVE REQUIREMENTS
Administrative Tasks:
1. Collect the course fees from all the students.
2. Ensure that the students have the required equipment.
3. Communicate the schedule to the students.
Have the students complete the Liability Release and Medical history forms.
The Instructor should review the Liability Release and Medical Forms before starting on the course.
Upon successful completion of the course the Instructor must:
6. Issue a SDI Certification card. Complete and submit the Registration Form to SDI HQ.
Award card.

1.8 REQUIRED EQUIPMENT
The CPR1st Student Slate and CPR1st instructor manual are mandatory for use during this course but instructor trainers may use any additional text or materials that they feel aid in presenting these topics.


1.9 REQUIRED SUBJECT AREAS
The following topics must be covered during this course. The CPR1ST Student Slate and Instructor Manual are mandatory for use during this course but instructors may use any additional text or materials that they feel help present these topics.
1. What is CPR1ST?
2. Define Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR).
A. Performing CPR
I. Asses scene and victim – EMS and statement
II. ABC’s
III. Chin lift and gentle neck extension
IV. Rule of 2’s
V. Continue CPR as long as needed
B. First Aid.
C. When and how should First Aid be administered
I. Assess injury and victims condition
II. Assess for “The Six Basics”
1) Breathing (absent) = CPR
2) Bleeding = Pressure
3) Broken = Immobilize
4) Burns = Cool Water
5) Bites = Cover
6) Blows = Watch

1.10 REQUIRED SKILL PERFORMANCE AND GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS
The Student must competently teach divers to provide CPR and administer O2 to breathing or non-breathing person.
1. CPR.
2. Perform CPR on a manikin
A. ABC’s.
B. Rule of 2’s.
3. First Aid.
4. Treat a simulated injury for each of “The Six Basics”
A. Immobilize joint.
B. Bandage wounded area.
C. Cool area with running water.
Instructors Trainers are required to evaluate all the following skills:
1. The instructor should demonstrate an understanding of oxygen administration and CPR.
2. The instructor must give one (1) presentation and be graded on the presentation.
