Inactive Diver Program - Refresher Course

1.1 INTRODUCTION
The Inactive Diver program is designed to update and review the knowledge and skill level of an inactive diver. SDI encourages the use of this program for Instructors, Assistant Instructors, Divemasters and Resorts or Dive Facilities that have questions regarding the diving history of an individual. This program can also be used as a catalyst for continuing education programs.

1.2 QUALIFICATIONS OF GRADUATES
Upon successful completion of this course, graduates may:
1. Enroll in the Advanced Diver development program or Specialty courses depending on what their prior certification was.
2. Dive without the direct supervision of an instructor.

1.3 WHO MAY TEACH
Who may teach this course?
3. An active SDI Instructor.
4. An SDI Assistant Instructor.

1.4 STUDENT – INSTRUCTOR RATIO
Academic:
5. Unlimited, so long as adequate facility, supplies and time are provided to insure comprehensive and complete training.
Confined Water (Swimming pool-like conditions):
6. A maximum of ten (10) students per Instructor or Assistant instructor.
Open Water (Ocean, lake, quarry, spring, river or estuary):
7. A maximum of eight (8) students per Instructor are allowed. However, it is the instructor’s discretion to reduce this number as conditions dictate.

1.5 STUDENT PRE-REQUISITES
To participate in the Inactive Diver course, the individual must:
8. Have proof of a certification card.



1.6 COURSE STRUCTURE AND DURATION
Water execution:
9. Training depth must not exceed eighteen (18) meter / sixty (60) feet.
10. One (1) dive required, second dive optional.
11. All dives must be completed during adequate lighting conditions.
Course Structure:
12. SDI allows instructors to structure courses according to the number of students participating and their skill level.
Duration:
13. The suggested number of training hours is four (4).


1.7 ADMINISTRATIVE REQUIREMENTS
Administrative Tasks:
14. Collect the course fees from all the students.
15. Ensure that the students have the required equipment.
16. Communicate the schedule to the students.
17. Have the students complete the Liability Release and Medical history forms.
18. The Instructor should review the Liability Release and Medical Forms before starting on the course.
There is no card to issue upon successful completion of the course.


1.8 REQUIRED EQUIPMENT
Basic SDI Open Water SCUBA equipment as prescribed earlier in this manual.


1.9 REQUIRED SKILL PERFORMANCE AND GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS
Although one (1) In-Water training dive is required (In-Water training outline is provided) the Instructor or Assistant Instructor may use their discretion with reference to the skills needed to complete the dive. SDI offers the following outline:
19. Plan Dive
A. Equalization techniques.
B. Communication signals.
C. Lung over-expansion problems.
D. Review of dive computer.
20. Scuba system assembly.
21. Weights adjustment / mask defog.
22. Don scuba system.
23. Adequate entry for site conditions.
24. Controlled descent.
25. Computer check.
26. Regulator clearing.
27. Regulator recovery.
28. Mask Clearing.
29. Fin use.
30. Buoyancy control – hovering.
31. Underwater tour.
32. Computer check.
33. Controlled ascent – computer assisted.
34. Exit.
35. Disassemble scuba system.
36. Log Dive.
In order to complete this course, students must:
37. Demonstrate mature and sound judgment concerning dive planning and execution.
38. Complete all open water requirements safely and efficiently.
