Nitrox Instructor

I. INTRODUCTION
This is the entry level certification course for Instructors wishing to teach enriched air nitrox (EAN) as a breathing gas. If open water dives are included, the maximum depth is not to exceed the skill level of the Instructor.

II. COURSE OBJECTIVES
The objectives of this course is to train Instructors in the benefits, hazards, and proper procedures for teaching EAN 22 to EAN 40.

III. QUALIFICATION OF GRADUATES
A. Upon successful completion of this course, graduates may engage in teaching activities utilizing EAN 22 to EAN 40.
B. Upon successful completion of this course, graduates are qualified to enroll in the TDI Advanced Nitrox Instructor Course or Decompression Procedures Instructor Course.

IV. WHO MAY TEACH
This course may be taught by any active TDI Nitrox Instructor Trainer.

V. INSTRUCTOR - INSTRUCTOR TRAINER RATIO
A. Classroom:
Unlimited, so long as adequate facility, supplies and additional time are provided to insure comprehensive and complete training
B. Openwater:
Openwater dives are optional (without direct supervision of an Instructor Trainer)

VI. INSTRUCTOR CANDIDATE PRE-REQUISITES
A. Minimum age of 18
B. Minimum certification of Open Water Instructor
C. Basic Nitrox Diver (may be combined with instructor program)
D. Minimum of 10 logged nitrox dives

VII. REQUIRED COURSE MINIMUMS
A. Classroom hours - 8
B. Open Water Dives (2 recommended but not required)

VIII. REQUIRED SUBJECT AREAS
The following topics must be covered during this course. The current TDI
Standards & Procedures Instructor Manual and TDI Nitrox Instructor
Guide is mandatory for use during this course but Instructor Trainers may use
any additional text or materials that they feel help present these topics.

C. Physics
1. Pressure review
2. Partial pressures
D. Equipment Requirements
1. Less than 40%
2. 40% and above
E. Dive Tables
1. Equivalent Air Depth
2. EAN Tables
3. Switching mixes on repetitive dives
F. Dive Computers
1. Mix adjustable
2. 02 integrated
G. Advantages and Disadvantages of EAN
1. Use as air for physiological advantage w/air tables or computers
2. Use to extend no-decompression bottom times or shorten surface intervals
3. Oxygen toxicity hazards and depth limits
4. Discussion of myths and facts regarding EAN mixtures
H. Procedures
1. Use and Theory of Oxygen Analyzer
2. Gas Analyzing and Logging

IX. GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS
In order to complete this course, Instructors candidates must:
1. Satisfactorily complete the TDI Nitrox written examination and be able to adequately explain each answer to a prospective student.
2. Demonstrate proficiency in analyzing oxygen / nitrogen mixtures
3. Demonstrate proficiency in teaching the Nitrox Diver course
4. One graded presentation on a Nitrox topic.
